Top 5 Plumbing Myths

|

There are a lot of myths surrounding plumbing, and if you succumb to one of these myths, you could wind up with a plumbing problem in your Oklahoma City home. Here are the top 5 plumbing myths that homeowners often hear.

A plumber is a plumber is a plumber

While it’s true that any licensed plumber should know how to do certain things, just like doctors and lawyers, plumbers tend to specialize. That means if you need a plumber for your house, you should pick one that specializes in residential plumbing. You also want to pick the right plumber for the right task. If you need your sewer line replaced, you want a plumber who has experience with that task.

Toilet tank cleaners are good for your toilet

Toilet tank cleaners with bleach are marketed as a way to clean your toilet as well as eliminate any odors. In reality, though, all that bleach really isn’t good for your toilet. Such cleaners also do nothing to get rid up buildup in your toilet bowl. A better option is to use vinegar every once in awhile.

Grease is OK — as long as you run hot water

Many people think it’s OK to put grease down your drain or garbage disposal as long as you run hot water along with it. But it’s not true. Grease clogs up your pipes and hot water doesn’t do anything to stop it. You should not put grease down your drains, period. Clean as much grease out of pans as you can with a paper towel before reaching them out in the sink.

It’s OK to put things other than toilet paper in the toilet

Some people think that food, cat litter, paper towels and other things are OK to flush — but they aren’t. You should put nothing but toilet paper and human waste down your toilet. That means no gum, food, wet wipes, diapers or sanitary napkins.

You can use drain cleaners as much as you want

Chemical drain cleaners are meant to be used once in a great while to clear out clogs. If you find yourself having to use them more than once a year, you may have a bigger problem that needs the attention of a problem. Because chemical drain cleaners are corrosive, using them too often can cause damage to your pipes.
